By the Late Cretaceous, Oaks, Maples, Walnuts and Magnolia trees flourished competing along side the still abundant conifers (pines and firs). Numerous ferns dominated the landscape, thriving in the moist and humid environment. Some of these ferns grew quite tall similar to the tree ferns of today.
During the Early Cretaceous period, flowering plants (angiosperms) began to appear. As these plants spread from the warmer climates into the cooler regions, some evolved into shrubs and small trees.
