Although the Triceratops was the largest of the ceratopsians, it had a small frill. Perhaps this frill was used for attracting mates or for a display of threatening behavior to ward off rivals as well as protection from the ferocious Tyrannosaurus rex.
In the shallow coves of lakes and ponds, snakes, frogs and turtles were quite common. They were easy prey for carnivorous birds with a mouthful of teeth or lunch for a quick footed predator.
